Mycobacteriosis in a Domestic Ferret (Mustela putorius furo)
A 4-year-old spayed female ferret presented with a 2-month history of anorexia, vomiting and occasional diarrhea. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed thickening of the gastric wall and enlarged abdominal lymph nodes. Biopsy samples from the thickened gastric wall, enlarged abdominal lymph nodes and liver were taken during an exploratory laparotomy. Based on the histopathological examination, myc...
متن کاملBiliary coccidiosis in a ferret (Mustela putorius furo).
This report documents the first case of biliary coccidiosis in the ferret. Multiple life stages of a coccidian parasite, including meronts, gametocytes, and oocysts were present in the epithelium of hepatic bile ducts and the gallbladder. Based on morphologic characteristics, the organisms were identified as Eimeria sp., most likely E. furonis.
متن کاملHodgkin’s-like lymphoma in a ferret (Mustela putorius furo)
A 7-year-old castrated male ferret developed unilateral cervical lymphadenomegaly over a 1-month period. Histological examination revealed proliferation of tumor cells in a diffuse and partially nodular pattern. The tumor cells were predominantly Hodgkin cells and binucleated Reed-Sternberg cells, characterized by abundant, clear, vacuolated cytoplasm, pleomorphic, ovoid nuclei with thick nucle...
متن کاملThe Domestic Ferret (Mustela putorius furo) as a Lethal Infection Model for 3 Species of Ebolavirus
Small-animal models have been developed for several Filoviridae species; however, serial adaptation was required to produce lethal infection. These adapted viruses have sequence changes in several genes, including those that modulate the host immune response. Nonhuman primate models do not require adaptation of filoviruses. Here, we describe lethal models of disease for Bundibugyo, Sudan, and Z...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterization of Microsatellite Markers in the Domestic Ferret (Mustela putorius furo)
The domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) is an important model organism for the study of avian influenza and other diseases of humans and animals, as well as a popular pet animal. In order to evaluate genetic diversity and study disease relationships in ferrets, 22 nuclear microsatellite loci (17 dinucleotide and 5 tetranucleotide) were developed from ferret genomic libraries and organized i...
